The Silver Star The five pointed star represents the Wampanoag (People of the Early Light).
To clarify the meaning, the Orator of Pokanoket states...
"Wampanoag means people of the early light. Because we live on the edge of the great waters, we see the light of grandfather sun earlier than those who live further inland. Some people say it means people of the first light but this is wrong. The first light was with our Creator. The Great Spirit created the Heavens and Earth long before mankind was created. Therefore, to say we are people of the first light is to re-arrange the time and place of the creation story. This is deemed unfitting. Light was created before man so therefore we never saw the first light.” Deerfoot Pokanoket Orator and Historian Royal House of Pokanoket
The people of the Wampanoag nation were the first to see the light of the sun as it came up to greet them in the morning. As they each woke up, they would go outside to talk with the Great Spirit and ask for wisdom for the day.
Isn’t seeing the sun rising is still a sight of beauty today? |
